Что это вообще такое?
Substitution и ellipsis нужны, чтобы:
- избегать повторов
- делать речь естественной, связной и “native-like”
- писать более академично и компактно
Substitution — замена слова / фразы
👉 Мы заменяем слово, фразу или целое действие другим словом.
a) Substitution с one / ones
Используется вместо исчисляемых существительных.
I don’t like this shirt. I prefer the blue one.These exercises are easier than the previous ones.
⚠️ C1-нюанс:
- one НЕ используется с неисчисляемыми
❌ I like this advice, not the old one.
✔ … not the old advice.
b) Substitution с do / does / did
Заменяет глагольную группу.
She works harder than he does.I didn’t enjoy the film, but she did.
📌 Часто используется для:
- сравнений
- согласия / несогласия
- контраста
c) Substitution с so / not
Используется после глаголов мышления и речи.
“Will it rain?” — I hope so.“Is he guilty?” — I think not.
✔ Формально и компактно — типично для C1 writing.
d) Substitution с the same / such
We faced the same problem last year.He has never experienced such pressure before.
Ellipsis — опущение очевидного
👉 Мы не говорим то, что и так понятно из контекста.
a) Ellipsis в коротких ответах
“Have you finished?” — Yes, I have.“Will you attend?” — I might.
(пропущено: finished the report / attend the meeting)
b) Ellipsis в сравнительных конструкциях
She works harder than he does (work).This solution is more effective than the previous one (was).
c) Ellipsis в сложных предложениях
While (he was) driving, he received a phone call.If (it is) necessary, we will revise the plan.
✔ Часто встречается в формальной письменной речи.
d) Ellipsis в passive & reporting structures
The report was submitted on time, and the data (were) analysed later.He said he would attend, and he (did).
