Hedging = выражение неопределённости, осторожности или предположения.

Примеры:

• seems to, tends to, may well, it is likely that, appears to, could.

Цель:

• избегать абсолютных утверждений
• звучать профессионально и взвешенно
• оставлять место для обсуждения / доказательств

Common hedging structures

1. Verbs + to-infinitive

• seem(s) to → кажется, что
• appear(s) to → по-видимому
• tend(s) to → как правило, склонны

Примеры:

• This approach seems to improve efficiency.
• The results appear to indicate a trend.
• Younger people tend to prefer digital communication.

2. Modal verbs

• may / might / could / can → возможность / вероятность
• may well → очень вероятно

Примеры:

• This may explain the discrepancy.
• The policy could have unintended consequences.
• Rising costs may well lead to restructuring.

3. Phrases

• it is likely that → вероятно, что
• it is possible that → возможно, что
• it seems that → похоже, что
• there is some evidence that → есть некоторые данные, что

• It is likely that stricter rules will be implemented.
• There is some evidence that the intervention is effective.
• It seems that participants responded positively.
